How to create .htaccess on windows

htAccessAlthough I have been working with Microsoft Windows for 13 years+ I have to admit that I was frustrated when I first tried to create .htaccess file for my new Apache installation !

Simply trying to create a new text document and naming it .htaccess will generate a windows error since, in Windows, the . [dot] indicates the end of a filename and you cannot have a file without a name.

2 ways to run Apache & IIS in parallel

Today I was in need of running Apache and IIS on the same Microsoft Windows 2003 server machine. Not only I found that the process is not well documented but also not easy to implement ! So I have decided to share with you my findings hoping that this post will also serve me as a document for future references .

  • An intermediate level of experience in Microsoft Windows, Apache and IIS is required
  • An good understanding of networking concepts is required

Are you giving up on Vista?

Vista LogoI bet you have heard nagging about Vista being very buggy, slow and unreliable. In my opinion, Vista is just another OS from Microsoft and it is NOT unreliable nor buggy. Although Vista is less reliable than its predecessor XP, but that does not make it unreliable in my opinion.
Moreover, a lot of peple complain about the incompatibility between Vista and some peripherals especially video card. But I mostly blame 3rd party companies here, because they didn’t develop stable drivers while Vista was in beta.

Adobe Lightroom keeps on crashing

Adobe LightroomI am into photography and I use Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos. I was so excited when I first started working with Lightoom until I started experiencing regular crashes while using it. And it crashes really hard that my CPU usage goes up to 50% even after I kill Lightroom’s process, so I end up forced to either restart or logoff.
BUT, I have discovered lately what has been causing these crashes.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Windows Logo You probably have heard about Microsoft preparing to release Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, its most successful operating system (in my humble opinion), and few days ago, on December 10, RC1 of this pack was published for beta users to download. So basically we cannot download it until the official release is published
However I was able to find a working hack to download SP3 directly from Microsoft.

Kill processes remotely

When you work in an environment that requires you to do all your work remotely, you start digging out all the available tools to help you solve problems remotely when they arise.

I, for instance, work in Lebanon while our data center is located in a different country, and we usually have a lot of processes running on our servers.
